Where Is Your Favorite Place to Knit?

I was thinking about where I like to knit the most, and I realized that I really don't have just one favorite place.

It depends on what I'm knitting, what else I'm doing, and sometimes even what time of year it is.

I'm one of those people who can knit almost anywhere, but there are definitely places I enjoy more than others.

My Favorite Chair

If it's evening and Jason and I are watching a movie or a series, you'll usually find me in my favorite chair with my knitting.

I have quite the setup!

There's a basket with several works in progress, my knitting bag that travels with me, and another bag with even more stuff. My OTT light is right beside me so I can see what I'm doing, and on the side table sits my yarn bowl.

Now, you might think the yarn bowl holds yarn.

Not usually!

It's full of stitch markers, tape measures, extra double-pointed needles, cable needles, scissors, and all those other little things that seem to accumulate when you're a knitter.

Everything I could possibly need is within reach.

Well, almost everything.

The hardest part is actually getting settled into that chair!

I'll sit down, pick up my knitting, and suddenly remember that I forgot to switch the laundry. Or I'll wonder if I remembered to scrub out the sink. Or I'll think of something else that really should be done.

Does anyone else do this?

Once I finally convince myself that everything else can wait, I'm perfectly happy to stay right there and knit for the evening.

A Cup of Coffee and My Deck

As much as I love my chair, I think one of my favorite places to knit is outside on our deck.

Especially on a beautiful summer morning with a cup of coffee.

This past summer was wonderful because we didn't seem to have nearly as many mosquitoes as we usually do here in Minnesota.

And believe me, that makes a difference!

I took advantage of it as much as I could.

There's something so peaceful about sitting outside in the morning, enjoying my coffee, listening to the sounds around me, and working on my knitting.

It was such a lovely way to start the day.

I wish we had more mornings like that!

Sometimes I Need the Kitchen Table

Of course, not every knitting project is suitable for relaxing in my favorite chair.

If I'm working on something that requires my full attention, you'll probably find me at the kitchen table.

Sometimes I need to spread out a pattern, count stitches, figure out a new technique, or just concentrate without a movie playing in the background.

That's when comfort takes second place to having room to work.

I love a project that I can knit without thinking too much, but I also enjoy the challenge of something that makes me pay attention.

I just know better than to try figuring out a complicated section while watching a good movie!

Knitting Helps Me Concentrate

I also have a project that lives in my home office specifically for Zoom calls.

It's something simple enough that I can do most of the knitting without looking at it.

Now, someone who doesn't knit might think that knitting during a meeting means I'm not paying attention.

For me, it's exactly the opposite.

Having something in my hands helps me settle down and concentrate on what's being said.

I'm actually more present in the conversation when I'm knitting.

And as an added bonus, I make progress on a project!

Knitting on the Go

I also enjoy knitting when we're traveling.

If Jason is driving, there's a pretty good chance I have knitting in my hands.

I should probably clarify that Jason is the one driving! 😂

I've even seen people who can knit while walking.

That's one thing I haven't tried.

When I'm out walking, I like to look around and enjoy nature and everything that's happening around me. I think I'll keep my knitting for when I'm sitting down.

But there was another place I used to knit that I really miss.

When my daughter was playing softball, I would bring my knitting along to her games.

I'd sit there watching her play, enjoying the game, and getting a little knitting done at the same time.

I loved those days.

It's funny how a knitting project can become part of a memory. I don't necessarily remember what I was knitting at all those games, but I remember how much I enjoyed being there.

Maybe It's Not Really About the Place

The more I think about it, the more I realize that my favorite place to knit changes depending on what I need at the time.

Sometimes I want the comfort of my chair and a good movie.

Sometimes I want the quiet of a summer morning on the deck.

Sometimes I need the kitchen table and enough concentration to figure out a tricky pattern.

And sometimes knitting is simply something I bring along so I can enjoy it while I'm doing something else.

I guess I don't need one perfect knitting spot.

Although I have to admit, that favorite chair with all my knitting supplies close at hand is pretty hard to beat!

What about you?

Do you have a favorite chair or special place where you love to knit or crochet? Do you take your projects everywhere you go?

Or is there a place you used to knit that brings back special memories?

I'd love to hear about it!

Happy knitting!

Onr favorite place to knit is on the couch where all my knitting stuff is, and the other is with knitting friends, wherever that may be.
